Home » Baptist Registration » What is Baptist Registration?

Baptist Registration is an endorsement that as a registrant, you are committing  to the ongoing development of character, knowledge and abilities which are deemed necessary to minister in the name of the Baptist Union of New Zealand and you are willing to uphold our core distinctives and values as New Zealand Baptists (as included in the Baptist Union of New Zealand Constitution and Baptist Administration Manual).

It is available to anyone who is ministering within, or on behalf of a Baptist faith community, or Baptist entity, or an approved body and meets the criterial. This is regardless of ministry type or function as long as it falls within the recognised categories of Baptist Registration.

Carey Centre for Lifelong Learning has the privilege of administering the registration process on behalf of the Baptist Union of New Zealand and implement the requirements as outlined in the Baptist Administration Manual and approved and sanctioned by the National Council.

If you’re new to Baptist Registration – this is your starting point.

If you’re wanting additional information, you are welcome to contact us at lifelonglearning@carey.ac.nz

What is the purpose of Baptist Registration ?

As Baptist faith communities, the BUNZ has a goal to bring Gospel renewal to the people and places within which God has placed them through a deep love for Jesus, the Bible, the Gospel, the Church, and the mission of God.

On this basis, the purpose of registration, is simple: to ensure that those who minister in, or on behalf of the Baptist Union of New Zealand do so in response to the call of the Holy Spirit and actively seek to maintain their:

        • own holistic well-being – as an example of a model of holistic well-being, Te Whare Tapa Whā recognises the importance of taha wairua (spirituality), taha hinengaro (mental health), taha tinana (physical health), taha whānau (family), and connection to the whenua (land)
        • personal, relational and professional integrity and accountability
        • ongoing growth and learning
        • organisational safety
        • an ongoing connection with the wider Baptist movement
What are the benefits of Baptist Registration?

By becoming registered the Baptist Union of New Zealand recognises your commitment to the ongoing development of your character, knowledge and abilities, which are deemed necessary to minister in the name of the Baptist Union of New Zealand.

Becoming registered is not only of personal benefit, but it beneficial for us as a Union of Churches, to have a registration standard that we are all committed and accountable to. This is a commitment to ensuring that we are developing robust leaders, who can lead thriving faith communities with integrity and competency. Thus, when a Baptist faith community, or entity, or approved body appoints someone who is registered, they can have confidence that the individual meets a recognised standard that involves a commitment to ongoing learning and growth, Baptist whānau engagement, external supervision support, and annual review.

Other personal benefits include:

  • When registered, you are provided with an annual framework and rhythm to support and encourage your personal growth and learning, Baptist whānau engagement, external supervision support, and annual review.
  • When registered, non-Church organisations/community groups can have the confidence that as a leader you have a recognised status.
  • You’re helped to achieve longevity in your ministry.

Those who are registered are also eligible to receive:

  • Discount membership at the Carey library.
  • Discount audit fee for Carey NZQA courses.
  • Eligibility to be considered as a Baptist Churches of New Zealand Marriage Celebrant . Please note that this is determined by the BUNZ. Whilst Marriage Celebrants are required to be Registered, Registration does not automatically mean approval as a Marriage Celebrant.
