Biblical Preaching Training
We are proud to offer the NZQA-accredited micro-credential, Certificate in Biblical Preaching.
This micro-credential course aims to equip participants with the basic knowledge, and skills to prepare and deliver sermons that are:
- Faithful to the text of Scripture
- Relevant to the context in which we live today
- Clear in content and structure
- Engaging for those who listen
- Formative and transformative for both the preacher and the listener
This course is particularly applicable for part-time and volunteer preachers, who may have some experience in preaching but no formal training, but is open to all preachers within churches and faith-based organisations in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Enrolling in the Certificate in Biblical Preaching (Micro-credential)
The 1-day in-person block course is being offered on the following alternative dates in 2026:
- Auckland: Saturday 7th March
- Wellington: Saturday 1st August
- Dunedin: Saturday 15th August

This micro-credential is a Level 5 course of 5 credits over 8 weeks. It is comprised of three parts:
- Online pre-reading (12 hours)
- 1-day in-person block course (8 hours)
- Written and oral assessments (30 hours)
Topics covered will include:
- The importance of biblical preaching
- The essential ingredients of effective Christian preaching
- The character, spirituality and ethics of the preacher
- The practice of observing and exegeting a biblical text
- The art of illustration
- The discipline of application
- The principles for shaping a sermon journey
- The skills of effective oral communication
- Evaluate the essential elements of effective Christian preaching;
- Utilise the observational and exegetical processes necessary to understand a passage of Scripture and conceive a biblical message birthed in that text;
- Effectively explain, illustrate and apply biblical truth so that listeners can hear and respond to God’s transforming word to them in their context. Design a structure for a sermon presentation that leads listeners on a clear and engaging journey;
- Utilise the core skills necessary for clear and cohesive oral delivery.
Assessments are a compulsory part of the credential. There are three assessments:
1. View 5 sermon recordings and write a brief commentary/reflection on each.
2. Prepare and deliver a sermon from a prescribed passage of Scripture.
3. Watch a video recording of their own sermon and write a self-reflection.
- Admission to the Certificate in Biblical Preaching (Micro-credential) is open to New Zealand Citizens and Permanent Residents.
- Prospective students should have some foundational knowledge of scripture. No prior experience in preaching is necessary (although it may be helpful).
- Prospective students will be expected to have the support of their faith community leadership to present their sermon as part of the assessment
- As most tuition is given in English, all applicants need to be proficient in understanding, reading, writing, and speaking English.
Please note: No credit recognition or RPL recognition of prior learning) will be recognised towards this micro-credential.
In order to gain admission, applicants under 20 must have achieved the following:
- National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA), with a minimum of 42 credits at Level 3 or higher on the National Qualifications Framework, and
- a minimum of 8 credits in English at Level 2 or higher, 4 credits of which must be in reading and 4 credits in writing
- a grade of C or higher in each of 3 subjects in New Zealand University Entrance, Business and Scholarships (NZUEBS) examinations
- NCEA equivalence which can include NZQA Level 4 certificates in a similar discipline, or other NZQA Level 5 certificates in a different discipline.

You will need to supply/upload the following information as part of the online application process:
Verified (e.g., by JP, lawyer, or pastor) evidence of Citizenship/Residency(e.g., passport)
All verified documents MUST have the following from the verifier (e.g., JP, lawyer, or pastor):
- The phrase, “certified true copy” or similar (i.e., “This is a true and accurate copy of the original, which I have sighted”)
- Signature
- Written name
- Title
- Date
Personal statement of approximately 500 words which describes your life and spiritual history, including:
- How and when you came to faith in Christ
- How you maintain and develop your Christian life
- Significant experiences that have shaped you
- Confirmation that you have a foundational knowledge of scripture and the support of your faith community leadership to present a sermon as part of the assessment
- Why you want to study at Carey
- If you are under 20 years of age, a verified copy of your academic transcript (e.g., NCEA) or equivalent.
Students who have previously enroled with Carey Baptist College will not be required to complete a full application, but will need to provide a personal statement as outlined above.
How much does it cost?
The tuition fees for the Certificate in Biblical Preaching (Micro-credential) are $320. Fees are inclusive of 15% GST.
