Theology Reading Group 2020 (Christa McKirland)

Theology Reading Group 2020 (Christa McKirland)

Despite the chasm that exists between the Creator and creatures, and out of deep love for us, God has not remained hidden to humankind. Through various modes of revelation, especially the Incarnation and Holy Scripture, we can glimpse aspects of who God is and how we are meant to live in light of this knowledge. One feeble attempt to discuss this divine reality is the field of systematic theology. Over these eight months, we will look at three different systematic approaches to this weighty task. My hope is that we would have our minds and hearts challenged to understand God in deeper ways and that this might lead us to richer worship and love for God.

Each month a new module opens up, and an online forum is provided to share your thoughts and reflections with the rest of the cohort:

Module 1: Kathryn Tanner, Jesus, Humanity and the Trinity, ch 1-2

Module 2: Kathryn Tanner, Jesus, Humanity and the Trinity, ch 3-4

Module 3: Sarah Coakley, GodSexuality and the Self: An Essay 'On the Trinity', ch 1-3

Module 4: Sarah Coakley, GodSexuality and the Self: An Essay 'On the Trinity', ch 4-5

Module 5: Sarah Coakley, GodSexuality and the Self: An Essay 'On the Trinity', ch 6-7

Module 6: Oliver Crisp, Analyzing Doctrine, ch 1-3

Module 7: Oliver Crisp, Analyzing Doctrine, ch 4-7

Module 8: Oliver Crisp, Analyzing Doctrine, ch 8-11

Christa McKirland is Carey's new lecturer in systematic theology. Before coming to Carey she was a Research Fellow at the Logos Institute at the University of St Andrews in the UK, where she received her doctorate in analytic and exegetical theology. Christa founded and is the executive director of Logia, an organization created at the invitation of the Logos Institute to support women pursuing postgraduate theological education.

Participants are expected to get hold of the readings themselves. The Carey library has copies of the books, and they are availble from Amazon and The Book Depoistory.
