This Youth option is designed to give you new insights about youth ministry. There is no expectation that you are working in a youth ministry role, in fact other church leadership roles often benefit from insight into areas of ministry different to their own.
In the first few weeks, as you begin:
Spend some time reflecting on your own understanding of youth ministry from a theological perspective. Record (journal) any things you feel are significant, or ideas you would like to engage with. This is to enable you at the end of this option to assess how far you have travelled through the eight-month period. This is a private document for you unless you choose to share something of the detail in your final reflection or with your coach.
Throughout the eight months:

Aim to read one of these about every 2 months, using the five questions in the Reflection Guide as a basis to aid your reflection as you read each book and discuss with your supervisor.
Arrange to visit four different youth ministries (about one every two months), in each case visiting a program they run. Meet with the youth pastor and ask:
a) What is the purpose of your youth ministry?
b) How does your understanding of the cross shape your youth ministry?
c) How do you do discipleship and mission?
d) In what ways do you engage young people in Scripture?
e) How do you structure youth ministry to fulfill all of the above?
Record (journal) what you have learnt from the discussions with each youth pastor around the questions you ask them. This may provide discussion material to engage in with your supervisor.
As you read the various volumes in A Theological Journey through Youth Ministry, using what you have learnt from the reading, reflect on your own ministry context and evaluate using the following four themes:
1. The purpose of youth ministry
2. The cross and spirituality in adolescence
3. Discipleship and mission
4. Engaging young people in Scripture
After completing the four different youth ministry visits, compare and analyse your findings from the four visits and decide on changes you plan to make in your own ministry as a result of these, giving the reasons why (outline this in your final written reflection to vlog).
Use the five questions in the Reflection Guide as a basis to aid your reflection as you read the book(s) – the questions can be used for each chapter, section, or the entire book. Use your response to these questions as conversation starting points when you meet with your supervisor, who is to be a dialogue partner as you engage with this material (meet with them at least once every two months), perhaps focus each meeting on a particular chapter, section, or idea.
By 1 October:
At the start of this eight-month option you need to make arrangements with a suitable person to act as your supervisor/mentor/spiritual director/coach through the time, meeting at least once every two months. This person should be someone accessible to your local context, able to meet physically or online with you regularly over the time. They need to be willing and able to walk alongside you during the eight months. Ask them if they would read the books listed above if they haven’t already. The objective is for your supervisor to meet with you and help you to assess your current ministry practice and develop your learning experience into new or altered patterns of ministry practice in your own context.
Ask your supervisor to help you engage with your own reflection – you might bring a different topic or area from the books each time you meet, as well as your responses to the five questions on the Reflection Guide from different parts of the readings.
Based on your reflection, ask your supervisor to engage with you as you work on the implementation of the four themes (in the Reflection section above) into your own ministry context. Ask them to engage with you as you work on the implementation of the structural plans/changes you come up with as you do the four youth ministry visits.
By 1 October:
Submit a 1000 word reflection (or 10 minute vlog) based on the eight-month process, commenting on your reflection and coaching. The facilitator will engage with your written reflection.
Sam oversees the Youth Pastoral Leadership Training at Carey and lectures in Youth Ministry. Over the years Sam has worked in a couple of Youth Pastoral roles and recently he completed a PostGradDip in Theology. Sam has a deep love for the local church, and for the discipleship of young people.
