1. Learning Experience

This Leadership option will help you to assess and change patterns of leadership in your own ministry context. This option is based on a read/reflect/discuss model throughout the year starting in February.

In the first few weeks, as you begin:

Spend some time reflecting on your own understanding of leadership from a theological perspective. Record (journal) any things you feel significant, or ideas you would like to engage with. This is to enable you at the end of this option to assess how far you have travelled through the eight-month period. There is no need to share this initial journal entry with your coach or the facilitator unless you wish to do so.

Throughout the eight months:

Read the following two books:

Patrick Lencioni, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable (New York: Jossey-Bass, 2006). Buy online at Book Depository, or borrow from the Carey library.

John P. Kotter, Leading Change (Boston, MA: Harvard Business Review Press, 1996). Buy online at Book Depository, or borrow from the Carey library

2. Reading/Reflection/Discussion

Break this option into roughly six six-week periods:

Read: In each six-week period, read the section of chapters in the reading outline below.

Reflect: With this section of reading in mind, answer the five questions in the Lifelong Learning for Registration Reflection Guide, journaling your answers (no more than 500 words each journal entry). These six journal entries are to be submitted to the facilitator at the end of the eight-month period along with your final reflection. Ideally these six-weekly journal entries will be written before each coaching/supervision/mentoring session and used as the basis for the conversation with your coach/supervisior/coach.

Discuss: At least every two months meet with your coach/supervisior/mentor and use your response to the five questions as a basis for discussion, considering how you might plan to change the pattern of leadership in your own ministry context.


Every six weeks start a new section:

12 February Read: Lencioni, Introduction to end of Part Two (pg 1-114)*

07 May Read: Lencioni, The Model to end of book (pg 185-229)*

Final Reflection

By 12 October, and following the readings, reflections/journalling and regular meetings with your coach, write a final reflection (500 words, or a 10 minute vlog). Discuss the results of the actions that you have undertaken over the ten months. What has happened as a result of the continuing education? 3. Coach

At the start of this eight-month option, you need to make arrangements with a suitable person to act as your coach through the time, meeting at least once every two months. This person should be someone accessible to your local context, able to meet physically or online with you regularly over this time. They need to be willing and able to walk alongside you during the ten months. Ask them if they would read the two books as well if they haven’t already. The objective is for your coach to meet with you and help you to assess your current ministry practice and develop your learning experience into new or altered patterns of ministry practice in your own context.

Ask your coach to work with you to change the pattern of leadership in your own ministry context, journeying with you as you make any changes over the course of this time in line with your reading and reflection.

By 12 October:

Submit your final reflection (500 words or 10 minute blog) and six journal entries – see details in section 2 above. The facilitator will engage with your written reflection.

Martyn has taught leadership papers at Carey for several years including collaborating with Charles Hewlett (Carey Principal) in teaching the Spiritual Leadership paper.
