This Māori Ministries option aims to provide engaging learning opportunities around the issues of Te Marae. The hope for this option is to help enable the participant to enter into a Māori worldview, deepening a sense of biculturalism for a New Zealand church leader.
In the first few weeks, as you begin:
Spend some time reflecting on your own local church context and your understanding of Māoridom. Record (journal) any things you feel are significant or remarkable or that you would like more insight on. This is to enable you at the end of this option to assess how far you have travelled through the twelve-month period. This is a private document for you unless you chose to share something of the detail in your final reflection.
Within the first four months:

As an option, you could also organise a visit to a local marae for a group, to learn local marae kawa and mana whenua (local people) stories.
Use the five questions in the Lifelong Learning for Registration Reflection Guide as a basis to aid your reflection on what you learn about marae. Use your response to these questions as conversation starting points when you meet with your coach, who is to be a dialogue partner as you engage with this material (meet with them at least once every two months), perhaps focus each meeting on a particular aspect or section from the book.
Near the end of the twelve month period write a reflection (1000 words, or a 10 minute vlog), discuss how the material and coaching has changed your view of Māoridom. Identify ways in which your own local church context may be affected by your new understanding. Submit this to the facilitator and share it with your coach.
At the start of this twelve-month option, you need to make arrangements with a suitable person to act as your coach throughout the twelve months, meeting at least once every two months.
With the above criteria this person should either be known to you and vice versa, or someone accessible and agreeable to journey with you from your local context and learning environment. You need to be able to meet physically. They need to be willing to walk alongside you during the twelve months (meeting five or six times for about an hour). Let them know the details of this Guided Learning option, and the objective for a coach; which is to meet with you and help you to assess your current ministry practice and develop your learning experience into new or altered patterns of ministry practice in your own context, through the learnt and applied chosen option.
It may not be necessary, but there is a Guide to Coaching page you could share with a potential coach to see that they are willing and able to work with you throughout the twelve months.
Ask your coach to assist you to identify and implement appropriate changes in your personal life and/or pastoral ministry. As you reflect on the material, your responses to the five questions on the Reflection Guide may create helpful starting points for discussion.

The coaching aspects of these Māori Ministries options are an important, fundamental component to local Māori/Pākehā ministry. It is primarily about honouring God-given identity through meaningful, respectful relationships.
David’s Māori tribal affiliations are Te Arawa & Ngati Pukenga from the western Bay of Plenty region. He is married to Denise and have three grown daughters, a son in-law and two mokopuna (grandchildren) and live in Mangere, Auckland. David was appointed Kaihautu for Manatū Iriiri Māori (formerly Baptist Māori Ministries), by the Baptist Māori Ministries Runanga, accepted and affirmed into the role by the Baptist National Assembly Council in August 2007.
