Communication, Church and Society (Mike Crudge)

Guided Learning twelve month framework Communication church and society 580

When mission is seen as communication an understanding of the relationship between church and society becomes crucial. This option will have monthly content to engage with to encourage reflection on the church’s place in New Zealand society and what this might mean for your specific local church. This option will begin in February and finish in November.

Each month there will be three componets to the learning:

  • Read/watch: most months a reading will be provided - some short (10 minutes), others longer (45 minutes), sometimes a video will be the content to engage with. There will sometimes be additional optional content to engage with. These will be supplied via the Facebook group.
  • Action/Reflection: a few questions will be provided for you to ponder through the month, along with some sort of action/activity to try within your normal local context.
  • Share: your learning is not done in isolation. This Guided Learning option has a closed Facebook group where you are expected to share something of your thinking/experiance each month with the others in the cohort.

February

Communication 101a: Common ground and shared understanding, good relationships.

  • Read/watch: 1200 word reading (10 minutes) - supplied on Facebook group.
  • Action/Reflection: Ponder the three questions at the end of the reading - journal/record your thoughts if this helps - base this pondering on your own experiance/thinking of communication.
On a personal note, think of someone in your life who does not have Christian faith (Christian faith is not a point of common ground or shared understanding between the two of you). What are the points of common ground you have with this person? How might you move from these points toward other things you might like to share with this person? Might this person have things they would like you to have a different understanding of? How might your own faith story and how you see the world impact this relationship? If you feel up to it, meet with this person as you normally would, and see if viewing your interaction through the lens of common ground and shared understanding makes any difference to the relationship.
Go through the same process (thinking at least) with an issue that you identify where church and society in New Zealand don’t share common ground - perhaps even your own church and your own neighbourhood.
  • Share some of your reflections on the Facebook group.
