You wouldn’t pick confusion as a qualification for astonishingly fruitful mission, or acute discomfort as the prerequisite for the emergence of boundary-breaking community, but that was the experience of Peter the Apostle when God disrupted his assumptions, challenged his practices, and brought him into a transformative encounter with the gentile military officer, Cornelius. That significant episode related (twice!) in Acts chapters 10-11 expanded the early Church’s perception of where, how and in whom God was at work, opening the door to more generous mission and the diverse community that became a distinctive characteristic of Jesus-followers in their divided world.
